Accounting & Controllership
The phrase “do more with less”, has never held more relevance to the world of the Controller.
As the leader of the financial close and safeguard of the books and records of a company, the Controller shoulders much of the burden of ensuring that the day to day accounting and reporting is correct. The tighter and shorter the close process is, the more quickly numbers are made available to reporting and financial planning groups to synthesize a story for the management team. If the Controllership team is not working as methodically and efficiently as they could be, the numbers can either take too long to reach the management team and/or may contain errors that impair management’s ability to make decisions regarding the business.
An effective Controller should exhibit the following characteristics:
- Well-rounded experience across the P&L and Balance Sheet
- Have a strong understanding of GAAP and where applicable, IFRS accounting treatment; preferably with a CPA and/or background in public accounting
- Possess a baseline understanding of internal control frameworks and/or SOX
- Understand their company’s revenue cycle extremely well
- Embrace automation and efficiencies for streamlining accruals and the transfer of information to enable a faster accounting close
- Front load accounting work earlier in the month to lighten the close period (which should ideally be a few days to a week) with the aid of a robust close calendar
- Possess strong interpersonal relationships and communication skills with leaders from other groups with co-dependencies for information such as the CFO, the Head of Sales, etc..
- Posses a strong understanding of system process flow at a transactional level
- Be a strong leader for their accounting team
